Delaware public records gold mine:
new open data portal
  Delaware launches Open Data Portal

Want to know which state agency buys the most pizza?

Maybe you're more curious about whether your favorite restaurant passed its last inspection, the traffic counts on your road or the most popular subjects at your local library.

That's just a sample of the information that state officials say will be searchable, sortable and, in some cases, mappable come Wednesday evening when Gov. Jack Markell unveils Delaware's new open data portal – an online clearinghouse of raw statistics and other nonpersonal information collected by state agencies.

From traffic/transit data to crime reports and information about licensing and certifications, the state’s Open Data Portal was officially launched this week at an event hosted by Technology Forum of Delaware and Open Data Delaware.

The initiative was established by Gov. Jack Markell earlier this year under Executive Order 57, which gives constituents a centralized resource finding data sets from state agencies. This “central repository” for open data collates information from state agencies and offices with interactive features and visual data like maps and charts, according to the website.  It also offers data in machine-readable formats for developers.

The site offers about 30 data sets ranging from restaurant inspection information to data on education and economic development.

Prospective parents will even be able to find out popular baby names.

From signing an executive order in favor of open data to doing the work of actually making it, Delaware’s open data advocates have gotten a lot done this year.

Last night, open data advocates in the First State gathered to celebrate the launch of the state’s Open Data Portal at 1313 Innovation. The launch was a collaboration between Open Data Delaware, Technology Forum of Delaware and the state.

Gov. Jack Markell and chief technology officer James Collins were present as well as Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf. With 30 datasets and over 35 maps, the portal gives easier access to those searching for the data. The event marks a new era of data transparency in the First State.
